Bruno Senna’s Suzuka weekend suffered a setback before qualifying on Saturday morning as the Brazilian endured a sizeable accident on the exit of Spoon Curve. After running out too wide, the Renault speared towards the inside barrier before its left-front wheel briefly moved underneath the car.

“I just pushed very hard on that lap, it was feeling okay, but unfortunately I put my wheels on too much of the exit kerb and that spat me into the wall,” Senna explained to BBC Sport.

“We lost a lot of running time yesterday and, before qualifying, that’s not the most important thing.”

He went on to express gratitude towards the Renault mechanics:

“They are very supportive and I’m grateful because of that. You know I’m pushing hard. I’m not here for fun – sometimes I make mistakes and they defend it.”

Qualifying begins at 2pm local time (BST +8) and can also be followed via the GPUpdate.net live report
