Fernando Alonso has hailed his second place finish as ‘fantastic’ at Suzuka, with the Spaniard having chased Jenson Button and moved to within one second before the McLaren driver improved his pace in the closing stages. Despite not clinching victory, the Champion of 2005 and 2006 remains highly satisfied with the encouraging result.
“That was a fun race but there was a lot of tyre degradation,” Alonso, who came from fifth on the grid, commented afterwards, “and at the start I didn’t actually pass any cars, but the thing is that we had sufficient pace to fight with McLaren and Red Bull today.
“To be on the podium is just fantastic – a good result for the team after several difficult races in which we have not been so competitive. It really means a lot and is big a motivation for us.”
Alonso was last seen on the podium at Monza in September.
