Sebastian Vettel: Back-to-back World Champion

10 October 2011

Formula 1 is celebrating its ninth back-to-back title winner on Monday, with Sebastian Vettel having finished third in the Japanese Grand Prix. The 24-year-old Red Bull driver has now joined an elite band of men, with the first consecutive championship-winning moment dating back to Sunday 23 August 1953.

32 men have picked up the F1 crown since the World Championship was inaugurated almost 62 years ago, although just over 28 percent of them have managed to retain a title on at least one occasion. Whether Vettel will now go on to eclipse Brabham, Stewart, Lauda, Piquet or Senna for a trio of wins – or perhaps even Prost’s four, Fangio’s five or Schumacher’s mega seven – remains to be seen, although he has already become the youngest driver to claim both a maiden and a second title.

Previous back-to-back Formula 1 World Championship winners:

1. Alberto Ascari, Italy - 1952-53 (Ferrari)
2. Juan Manuel Fangio, Argentina - 1954-57 (Maserati, Mercedes, Ferrari)
3. Jack Brabham, Australia - 1959-60 (Cooper)
4. Alain Prost, France - 1985-86 (McLaren)
5. Ayrton Senna, Brazil - 1990-91 (McLaren)
6. Michael Schumacher, Germany - 1994-95, 2000-04 (Benetton, Ferrari)
7. Mika Häkkinen, Finland - 1998-99 (McLaren)
8. Fernando Alonso, Spain - 2005-06 (Renault)

As the records show, Germany becomes the first country to produce a pair of back-to-back F1 title winners, courtesy of Vettel and Michael Schumacher. The record books also demonstrate that Juan Manuel Fangio is unique, in that he is the only driver to ever seal consecutive championship titles with different teams.
