Bird would take Friday drives ‘with both hands’

21 October 2011

Sam Bird is yet to confirm his plans for the 2012 season, although the Englishman is currently negotiating deals related to both Formula 1 and GP2. The 24-year-old, Roehampton-born driver was testing for the Trident GP2 team in Barcelona on Thursday and admits that Friday practice drives for Mercedes GP would be ideal.

“It’s way too early to tell for me,” Bird told GPUpdate.net when looking on to next year. “All I know is that myself and Trident have done some good work over the one day in Jerez I did with them and the one day here. I think it’s valuable work that they will take away and that I can take away as a driver. Whether we work together again is a different story.

“We’re working towards securing something for 2012, whether it be in Formula 1 or GP2 or whatever, and we’ll have to wait and see what I’m doing.”

When asked if he would consider the role of regular Friday drives next season, having worked closely alongside Brackley’s Mercedes in 2011, Bird replied:

“I would take that opportunity with both hands, very thankfully. I’ve loved working with them and I learn stuff all the time. I’m working quite a lot at the factory and every day there’s something new to learn, it’s very good. However, we will have to wait and see whether something like that were to occur.”
