Sauber heads to next weekend’s inaugural Indian Grand Prix in a somewhat vigilant mood, having been caught out in Korea and suffering one of the team’s worst weekends of the season so far, with both Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Pérez being beaten to the Yeongam chequered flag by the Team Lotus car of Heikki Kovalainen.
“After our performance in Korea was clearly below our own expectations,” admits Sauber Technical Director James Key. “We analysed all the data carefully and came to the conclusion that we underestimated the limitation on the front axle and front tyres - as a result we suffered from too much understeer, which resulted in over loading the front tyres.”
With this in mind, the Englishman – who moved to Sauber from Force India in 2010 – is adopting an extra careful approach for the new Buddh International Circuit.
“Like Korea last year, at a brand-new track we expect that things like the evolution of grip will be quite significant over the weekend,” Key explains. “This will influence the balance of the car and you will possibly have to change the downforce level. On the car we will have some small modifications to the rear wings and some small updates on the front wing.”
