Williams duo upbeat after virtually driving India

24 October 2011

Williams pairing Rubens Barrichello and Pastor Maldonado head to this weekend’s first ever Indian Grand Prix with optimism, despite the Grove team’s distinct lack of form across the 2011 season. Marooned in ninth place for Constructors’ honours, the former World Champion outfit is yet to score since Spa in late August.

In order to ensure the best possible preparation for the debuting event, both South Americans have been driving the Buddh International Circuit in virtual fashion.

“I have never been to India and, as the circuit is new, I have been preparing by playing my home simulator to get to know the track,” says Brazilian Barrichello, who won the inaugural Chinese Grand Prix in 2004.

“I am very much looking forward to this race as it will be different to other weekends, in terms of culture. I have always wanted to go to India, so this is a great opportunity for me to get to know the country as well as do what I love.”

As is the case with most drivers, Maldonado is also preparing for a first visit to the Republic, which is the world’s second most populous country.

“I think India will be really interesting for everyone,” the Venezuelan comments. “I haven’t been before, so I can’t wait to get there. Going somewhere new and experiencing new things is always exciting. The circuit itself looks good and it will be new for all the drivers. For once, we will all be starting from scratch.

“I was at the factory last week working with my engineers in the simulator, so I feel as ready as I can be.”
