Glock halted by failure of fifth gear

2011 Indian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Saturday starting grid

Timo Glock has explained that a broken fifth gear was the reason for stepping out of his Virgin Racing machine early this afternoon, with the German driver unable to complete more than three laps of the new Buddh International Circuit in qualifying.

Having beaten team-mate Jérôme d'Ambrosio and both HRT F1 cars in final free practice, the 29-year-old now has to face starting at the back of the grid.

"The fifth gear broke unfortunately," Glock told BBC Sport. "It’s bit strange because we’ve never had a problem with the gearbox this year, so we have to find out what the problem was. In general it’s a shame because we had good speed in the car, I felt quite comfortable.

"We started (qualifying) on the Hard tyre to save one Soft tyre for tomorrow, and I had quite good speed already after one lap but then the gear broke and that’s it for me!"
