Alonso 'extremely happy' with podium finish

2011 Indian Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Fernando Alonso has expressed his delight at completing the podium finishers in the first ever Indian Grand Prix, with the Ferrari driver following home Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel and McLaren man Jenson Button. The Spaniard lost a position at the start, before fighting back and regaining third during the second phase of pit stops.

"We didn’t make a perfect start today," Alonso stated. "To be at a very new circuit and starting on the clean side, we didn’t have the grip that we expected. I think the other side of the grid started quicker than us, so we lost a couple of positions there.

"Then with Mark at the second pit stop he decided to stop and then we did two extra laps and we were able to overtake him. So I’m extremely happy to be on the podium to be on the podium in the first race here in India, to taste the champagne is always nice in the first race in a new country.

"But as Sebastian and Jenson said, there are mixed feelings this weekend. It has been a sad couple of weeks for motorsport, I think we all raced for them today and will always remember these two fantastic people."
