Felipe Massa was left extremely downcast after Sunday’s Indian Grand Prix, with the Brazilian and Lewis Hamilton having made contact once again. On this occasion, the Ferrari driver was handed a drive-through penalty after the 2008 championship rivals came together at Turn 5, a fast-sweeping left-hander.
Hamilton and Massa have collided on no less than five occasions this season, with the first being at Monaco’s Fairmont Hairpin in May; since then, further clashes have come at Silverstone’s Club chicane, Memorial corner in Singapore and the Casio Triangle chicane in Japan. There was also a moment in Singapore qualifying, with the two cars almost colliding as they fought for track position.
“There’s not much to say at the end of a weekend like this,” Massa said on Sunday, having been tipped into a spin before clouting a kerb and breaking his front-left suspension just minutes later. “I am really unhappy that I was not able to finish a race in which I showed I had the pace to fight for the podium.
“As for the collision with Hamilton, I can only say I do not share the opinion of the stewards who inflicted the punishment. I simply stayed on the ideal line, braking on the limit and staying on the part of the track that was rubbered in. What else could I do? It’s the umpteenth time that Hamilton runs into me this year and it seems it’s some sort of fatal attraction.”
The Paulista adds that he will not attempt to talk to his rival, having only annoyed Hamilton when confronting him during media interviews in Marina Bay.
“In the past, I tried to talk to him but he did not seem to be interested in doing so,” Massa continues. “Now it’s best to immediately turn the page and think of the final two Grands Prix of the year. I will try and forget this trip to India as quickly as possible, but that will be absolutely nothing to do with the country!”
