Michael to start McLaren work in Abu Dhabi

3 November 2011

Sam Michael will enjoy an early start in his new role as McLaren Sporting Director in Abu Dhabi, the Woking team has confirmed to GPUpdate.net. The Australian has switched teams for the first time in ten years, having spent a decade with Williams.

Formerly Race Engineer to Ralf Schumacher at Jordan, Michael moved to Williams in 2001 before taking over from Patrick Head as Technical Director from 2004. However, his Formula 1 career began with Lotus as long ago as in 1993.

His new position with McLaren was announced in September of this year, although he had not been expected to join the team until the start of 2012.

Replacing Michael at Williams is Mike Coughlan, the former McLaren employee who was a key figure in the ‘Spygate’ espionage scandal involving Ferrari in 2007.
