Formula 1 governing body the FIA has officially confirmed that the Renault, Lotus and Virgin team names will be altered for the 2012 Formula 1 season. However, contrary to reports, Lotus Renault GP will keep the name of the departed French car manufacturer in its official team title.
The name changes were agreed amongst all teams at last Thursday’s meeting of the F1 Commission, chaired by FOM’s Bernie Ecclestone, although they have now been officially verified by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) in Paris.
As previously believed, Team Lotus will now run under Caterham branding whereas Marussia has dropped the Virgin name from its title, although Sir Richard Branson’s company will remain a partner. In the case of Lotus Renault GP, the 'Renault' element remains although the Enstone team wishes for its cars to be recognised as ‘Lotus’.
The modifications are as follows:
- Lotus Renault GP keeps title but swaps chassis name to ‘Lotus’
- Team Lotus renamed as ‘Caterham F1 Team’
- Virgin Racing renamed as ‘Marussia F1 Team’
