Rosberg extends contract with Mercedes GP

10 November 2011

Mercedes Grand Prix has announced that Nico Rosberg will be remaining with the team for at least another two seasons. Having joined the silver arrows in 2010, the new deal will take the German ‘into the 2013 season and beyond’ and quashes rumours that the son of 1982 Champion Keke may be moving to Ferrari.

Although 2011 has been a difficult campaign for the former title-winning team then known as Brawn GP, Rosberg was the only driver to achieve three podium finishes last year. The exact length of his new contract remains unknown, but a likely situation is that the 2012 and 2013 seasons are fixed, with an option remaining open for afterwards.

“I am very excited to have extended my contract with the Mercedes GP Petronas team,” he says via an official statement. “To win in a silver arrow will be one of the highlights of my life so far and I greatly enjoy helping to lead our team in our quest to become the best in Formula 1.

“I have every confidence that the team will provide me with a winning car and that we
will be able to contribute to the fantastic racing heritage of the silver arrows. I look forward to great times in the years ahead with the Mercedes-Benz family.”

Team Principal Ross Brawn has also expressed his feelings over the new deal.

“We are delighted to have extended our contract with Nico, as we know that he is a driver who can win races and championships,” the Englishman comments. “Nico has performed exceptionally well for our silver arrows team over the past two seasons, achieving results at the very limit of the technical capabilities of our current car.

“He has an excellent work ethic and, together with Michael (Schumacher), this gives us a driver pairing who consistently push the team to improve and progress. As we continue to strengthen our team for the future, we look forward to providing Nico with a car which will enable him to compete right at the front of the field and achieve his deserved first win in Formula 1.”

Rosberg, then the reigning GP2 Champion, debuted in F1 for Williams in 2006. A first podium finish came at the Australian Grand Prix of 2008, although his best finishing position to date is second at that year’s inaugural Singapore race. He managed a front row grid slot in Malaysia last season before going on to finish the year ahead of seven-time World Champion team-mate Michael Schumacher.
