Force India has announced that Johnny Cecotto Jr, GP2 racer and son of the former motorcycling rider of the same name, will be testing at text week’s Young Driver session in Abu Dhabi. The 22-year-old, of joint Venezuelan and German nationality, will be in action alongside Britain’s Max Chilton.
Cecotto will run the Mercedes-powered car on Wednesday, enjoying a full day of running in the VJM04. His father, despite being most recognised for his motorcycling races, competed in Formula 1 for Theodore and Toleman in 1983 and 1984.
“I think all drivers want to race in Formula 1, so the chance to get time in the Sahara Force India car is a big moment for me,” Cecotto Jr. says. “In fact, I can’t stop smiling at the thought of driving such an amazing car.
“I know there’s a massive amount to learn and a lot of work to get through on the day, but I definitely feel ready to get behind the wheel. I hope I can do a good job and repay the faith the team have shown by giving me a chance in the car.”
Other drivers tipped for a Force India test next week had been The Netherlands’ Yelmer Buurman and France’s Charles Pic, although there are now reports in the paddock that the latter may have signed a 2012 race deal with Marussia.
