Gascoyne: A good day for Lotus

2011 Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix: Friday second free practice results

Mike Gascoyne was pleased with the performance of Team Lotus in Abu Dhabi on Friday, with the day marking the penultimate Practice 1 and 2 sessions for the squad before it becomes ‘Caterham Formula 1’ for the 2012 season.

As McLaren locked out the top of the timesheets, Lotus’ Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli finished 18th and 19th quickest, both ahead of Nico Rosberg whose works Mercedes car ran into trouble.

“A good day for us,” reported Gascoyne, Lotus’ Chief Technical Officer. “We completed the planned program on both cars with no issues all day, keeping up the much improved reliability record we have had in the latter part of the season.

“This morning the two drivers ran on the development tyres (more durable Soft compound which Pirelli is testing for 2012) and Heikki was working on brake comparisons, so we have some useful data to look at from those.

“In the afternoon we worked on race evaluations on both compounds (standard 2011 Soft and Medium) and I think we look pretty good on both the low and heavy fuel loads on both. All in all a good Friday, setting us up well for the rest of the weekend.”
