Whitmarsh hails ‘faultless’ Hamilton race

2011 Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix: Sunday race results

Martin Whitmarsh was naturally delighted by Lewis Hamilton’s third win of the 2011 Formula 1 season in Abu Dhabi, the Englishman’s first since Germany in July, significantly raising McLaren confidence levels as next season draws closer.

Although Hamilton can no longer finish ahead of Jenson Button in the championship, meaning he is beaten by a team-mate for the first time in his F1 career, Whitmarsh is sure that the Yas Marina victory is a vital step for the 2008 Champion.

“Lewis drove an utterly faultless race today, taking the lead at the second corner and controlling the gap back to Fernando (Alonso) with consummate skill over the remaining 54 laps,” Whitmarsh said. “To put it simply, he was brilliant today.

“It was Lewis’s 17th career victory, all of them scored for McLaren, his third of the season and the sixth time this year we’ve had occasion to pull on our famous rocket-red victory t-shirts. Bring it on!”

F1 now heads to Brazil, scene of the season-ending event on 27 November. McLaren’s last victory at Interlagos came with Juan Pablo Montoya in 2005.
