Lewis Hamilton believes his latest Formula 1 victory could provide the platform for even more success, explaining that his level of confidence has been boosted following an extremely trying period in the sport. The McLaren driver stormed to victory in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, never looking back after Sebastian Vettel’s first lap puncture.
The 2008 Champion has endured lots of criticism for a number of on-track collisions this year, most notably with Ferrari rival Felipe Massa. Added to his recent split with singer Nicole Scherzinger, the 26-year-old has faced stiff competition from experienced team-mate Jenson Button, the latter now guaranteed to finish ahead in the overall standings this season.
However, Hamilton's recent triumph has left him in a positive frame of mind, the Briton hoping that it could mark the start of a more permanent return to winning ways.
"It is early days yet, but this is definitely the start of something hopefully very good," he explained. "We've got another great race ahead in Brazil and I've got to put my focus on that and try to keep the momentum. With the pressure I've been under and the doubt that has surrounded me, I feel massively proud.
"I definitely think this weekend I've been clearer in my mind and had less weighing on me. I've had less thoughts, issues and whatever problems that I've got. I was just able to drive clearly. In the last race I had that mistake (collision with Massa) when I was not thinking straight.
"This weekend I was able to think straight and I don't know if that's because I had some great support here but I've had a positive feeling all weekend and I feel very fortunate. When I was doing the lap on my way in I was thinking that this was definitely one of my best races."
