Sam Bird was left encouraged by the ‘good work’ that he and Mercedes GP completed at the Yas Marina Circuit on Tuesday, with the Briton continuing the squad’s on-track development for the 2012 season. Despite an early transmission issue, the 24-year-old was able to finish ninth quickest overall with a time of 1:43.548.
"We did some good work today as the team began on-track preparations for the 2012 season," said Bird. "It's fantastic to be behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car again, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself out there.
"I'm looking forward to the next two days and making a contribution to the team's work for 2012. Many thanks to Mercedes GP Petronas for giving me this opportunity."
Bird was the highest placed British driver in GP2 this season, ending the year in sixth place overall with a total of three podium finishes to his name.
