Ferrari rolled out its 2009 Formula 1 car on Tuesday in order to test two drivers who have been competing in the Italian F3 championship. The scene was Vallelunga and the test was able to take place thanks to a loophole in the sporting regulations, as the F60 chassis in question was prepared by Ferrari’s Corse Clienti department.
Although the F60 itself is a 2009 specification car, it was running on the current Pirelli F1 tyres. The pair of drivers were Italian Formula 3 Champion, 25-year-old Sergio Campana of Italy, and 20-year-old Michael Lewis of the United States, the season’s highest-placed rookie driver.
Campana ended the day quickest, with a best lap time of 1:20.600 while racking up a total of 43 laps. Lewis recorded 45 laps, managing a best effort of 1:21.040.
“Our commitment to the youngsters in the Italian F3 will definitely run in 2012,” says Luca Baldisserri, head of the Ferrari Driver Academy.
“Since 2008, we have offered this opportunity to the most deserving drivers from the series, running them in our F1 car which, if only for a day, gives them a chance to realise their dream of getting close to the world of Ferrari.”
