McLaren’s Neale denies Honda engine rumours

24 November 2011

McLaren Managing Director Jonathan Neale has denied that the team is in talks with Honda regarding a possible change of engine supplier for 2014. Last weekend, it was reported in the German media that the two parties could reunite when the new Formula 1 engine era begins.

From the start of 2014, F1 will switch from 2.4-litre, normally aspirated V8 engines to 1.6-litre V6 turbo powerplants. McLaren and Honda were last working together in 1992 and, according to the reports in Germany, the partnership could continue. However, Neale has stated that the Woking squad remains committed to Mercedes-Benz.

“That’s all wide of the mark,” Neale said of the gossip in the latest Vodafone Phone-In. “We are very happy with and enjoying our partnership with Mercedes.

"We aren’t quite sure where that story came from, in truth, but I can stop the rumour and say that we are entirely focused on our Mercedes-Benz relationship - it is a long one spanning many wins and championships and long may it continue.”

McLaren linked up with Mercedes in 1996, with David Coulthard taking the first race victory for the partnership at the follow year’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
