Lotus Renault GP has ‘changed the words’ of Robert Kubica and the Pole will in fact be fit enough to return for the 2012 Formula 1 season. That is according to manager Daniele Morelli, who also claims that – contrary to statements from the team – Kubica’s current contract will terminate at the end of December 2011.
On Wednesday morning, Enstone-based LRGP issued a press release claiming that Kubica would not be able to make an F1 comeback next year, adding the following words from the driver:
“Even if I’ve been working very, very hard over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the conclusion that I am not yet certain to be ready for the 2012 season. I have called the team and I have informed them of the situation. This was a difficult decision to make, but it is the most reasonable one.”
However, when speaking to Italy’s Gazetta della Sport, Morelli claimed otherwise.
“I can’t understand why Renault would have changed Robert’s words,” said the driver manager. “It is not true that he will not be ready for 2012. What is stated is that he is not certain whether he will be ready for pre-season testing in February.”
Morelli also says that Kubica’s contract will end this December, as opposed to the end of next year as continuously stated by the team. On top of this, he stresses that no talks are in place for an extension into 2013, as also mentioned by the team in Wednesday’s statement.
“We do hope to be ready (for 2012), but there will be a delay of a few months,” Morelli continues. “But 2013 has never been mentioned; LRGP will go its own way for drivers and we will look for alternatives. As of January, we will be free to go in any direction.”
The manager summed up that, although Kubica has put on some weight since his recovery from an horrific February rallying accident began, his injured right leg is now as strong as the left. Morelli also notes that strength in the right hand continues to build and should be sufficient by the end of January.
