Michael Schumacher has described former Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello as ‘one of the icons of Formula 1’ and a man who deserves to be on the grid next year. With Williams yet to announce its drivers for 2012 and names such as Adrian Sutil and Kimi Räikkönen being linked to the squad, Barrichello has been tipped for an exit.
However, Schumacher believes that the Brazilian has the speed to continue in the sport, and hopes that the decision made is not purely for financial reasons.
"He is one of the icons of Formula 1 and it would be sad for him not to be on the grid next year," Schumacher explained to TotalRace. "I cross my fingers that it is not just about money, but also about quality. He should have a seat for the next season."
The pair were team-mates for a total of six seasons at Ferrari from 2000-2005, a period in which Schumacher picked up five highly impressive World Championship titles, with Barrichello earning a personal best runner-up spot in both 2002 and 2004.
