No rush to sign new contract, says Hamilton

29 November 2011

Lewis Hamilton says he has sufficient time for negotiating a new McLaren contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the 2012 Formula 1 season. The 2008 World Champion has just ended the fourth year of a five-year deal, but is expected to remain with the Woking outfit after what has been his most challenging season so far.

Hamilton joined McLaren in 2007, quickly establishing a ‘superstar’ status thanks to his highly successful rookie campaign; at the end of the year, he confirmed a 100 million dollar deal which stretches to the end of 2012. When hearing of reports that he could be switching team for 2013, Hamilton stated that he intends to stay put.

“Martin (Whitmarsh, Team Principal) has already spoken to me about re-signing, so I know it's there at some point and I'll guess we'll sit down,” Hamilton explained to reporters, adding that the chances are strong of staying with McLaren.

“What is most important for me next year is getting back to where I should be, back to the good performance - back to winning, back to enjoying life and enjoying the year; I think I'm there now, it's getting better, and I just want to continue on this path because it would be good.”

When asked to pinpoint a period for re-signing, Hamilton replied:

“I'm in no rush. I don't think there's any question of my commitment to the team, so there's no real rush to have to do anything.”
