Pic expecting tough start to debut season

7 December 2011

Newly-signed Marussia Virgin Racing driver Charles Pic says he is ‘fully aware’ that the opening few races of the 2012 campaign are going to be difficult, with the Frenchman set to make his Formula 1 debut after just six days of pre-season testing.

The 21-year-old competed for Addax in GP2 last year, claiming fourth in the overall standings with two race wins and three second place finishes to his name.

"I am not afraid of anything, but I am fully aware it is going to be tough, and I will have to work hard," Pic admitted during a press day in Paris. "But I am not concerned - I want to do the best job possible."

"It means I need to set up a timetable to make sure I can learn things in a different way. Six days of testing is a very short period of time (to adjust to driving an F1 car), and not quite enough to be ready for Melbourne. So we need to set up a good programme so that the two months in winter can be used for the best."

Pic got behind the wheel of an F1 car for the first time during the recent Young Driver test in Abu Dhabi, impressing Virgin enough to secure a seat for 2012.
