Professor Sid Watkins has announced his retirement as President of the FIA Institute, having joined the the safety-orientated programme back in 2004. The highly-respected neurosurgeon will be most remembered for his efforts as the sport's Race Doctor, a position he held from the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix until January 2005.
"It has been an honour and a great pleasure to lead the Institute since its establishment," explained 83-year-old Watkins. "I am very proud of our achievements and our plans for the future, both in terms of motor sport safety and sustainability. I look forward to continue making a modest contribution to these in my new capacity as Honorary President."
Professor Gérard Saillant will step-up to replace Watkins, admitting that a wealth of knowledge has been amassed by working alongside one of the sport's icons.
"I have learnt a great deal from working with Professor Watkins and I now look forward to progressing his work as the new President," Saillant added. "We have made great strides in motor sport safety and sustainability but there is always more to do and I am as committed as ever to ensuring these important developments continue."
