Gascoyne: It’s time to beat established teams

16 December 2011

Mike Gascoyne is confident that the rebranded Caterham team will be able to challenge a number of established runners in 2012. The year will be a busy one for Gascoyne personally, as he assists the subsidiary Caterham Composites company.

With Mark Smith Technical Director of the F1 team, Gascoyne will initially spend around one day per week working with Caterham Composites. He will continue to attend Formula 1 race events in his role as Chief Technical Officer and is highly optimistic of the team’s chances for success in its third season.

“We’ve finished the championship in tenth place two years running and that puts us on a sound financial footing,” he said in the final edition of online magazine Team Lotus Notes.

“We are now an established Formula 1 team. I think, with the announcements we’ve made about corporate developments and the new partners we have, we are showing we are a really serious outfit, so now it’s time to take the fight to more established teams and start beating them.”

With the naming row involving Lotus Renault GP and its owner Group Now finally over, Gascoyne is sure that Caterham can thrive under its new brand.

“We’ve always been a proper racing team but we were one constrained by the limitations of being a new team,” he began to sum up. “Now, though, it’s time to move on. We’ve established ourselves and it’s now time to get on with beating the opposition. We’ve got our name, we’ve got our identity and now we’ll get out there and go racing.”

To date, the team’s best Grand Prix finish is the 12th place finish of Heikki Kovalainen in the 2010 Japanese Grand Prix.
