Buemi 'fell from the sky' after losing seat

15 December 2011

Sébastien Buemi says he was completely taken aback by Toro Rosso’s decision to drop him for the 2012 season, mirroring the thoughts of former team-mate Jaime Alguersuari who has also been left without a seat. The Swiss driver was completing laps on the Red Bull simulator in Milton Keynes when he received the news, with Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne forming the team’s 2012 line-up.

"Completely, I fell from the sky!" Buemi is quoted as saying by Swiss newspaper 24 heures, when asked if he felt surprised by the Italian outfit’s decision. "A few days earlier, I had been discussing things for the next season. I was in the simulator yesterday morning at Red Bull Racing in Milton Keynes, where Franz (Tost, Toro Rosso Team Principal) and Helmut (Marko, Red Bull advisor) called me...

"Obviously I'm disappointed, but it is their decision and I respect it. I have not forgotten that without them I would never have come this far, they helped me tremendously for a long time, almost since my debut in Formula BMW, then F3, GP2 and F1."

Buemi says he is now unsure as to whether or not he will be able to find a race seat for the upcoming season, but has vowed to remain upbeat for the time being.

"I cannot say right now," he said. "Apart from the fact that I am no longer with Toro Rosso for 2012, the doors are not completely closed for me at Red Bull. We did a good job together until now and there is a good foundation. For my future, there are plenty of things possible. I will stay positive and thoroughly motivated."
