Vettel an all-time great, says Ecclestone

18 December 2011

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has described Sebastian Vettel as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport, explaining that both he and Alain Prost stand out as all-time legends. The 81-year-old believes the German has been ‘superb’ during his career so far, having notched up two world titles after just three full seasons.

"Well it’s so difficult to say, with different times and different cars," Ecclestone, who hails from Bungay in Suffolk, told Al Jazeera when asked to name his greatest ever F1 driver. "Everything was different, but the one that everybody sort of glosses over and talks about is Alain Prost. He could have won a couple more races, and he lost (the title) by one point in one place and half a point in another.

"But otherwise, this young guy called Sebastian Vettel at the moment, the German driver. He’s quite superb really, we seem to keep breeding them."

From his 81-race spell in F1 to date, Red Bull's Vettel holds a pole position success ratio of 37 percent and has won over a quarter of the Grands Prix he has competed in.
