Karthikeyan still hoping for 2012 seat

19 December 2011

Narain Karthikeyan still hopes to stay in F1 next year, with one HRT seat remaining alongside Pedro de la Rosa. In 2011, the returning Indian was replaced by Daniel Ricciardo from Silverstone onwards, but did impress on his one-off return in October.

Having made a brief HRT comeback by taking Vitantonio Liuzzi’s cockpit for the inaugural Indian Grand Prix, Karthikeyan surprised many by overhauling and out-racing Ricciardo on the Sunday. He now hopes to stay on-board next season.

“I had a good Indian Grand Prix and the intention is to see what opportunities are available in Formula 1 and see how we can conclude something,” he told Reuters. “I'm not dealing with it directly - so there are people who are liaising on behalf of me.”

He added that HRT’s decision to replace Team Principal Colin Kolles with Luis Pérez-Sala is a positive one, with future objectives in mind.

“With a small team he did a good job,” Karthikeyan began to sum up, “but now the team has a different direction and that's a good thing.”

At the end of last week, HRT stated that its second driver would not be named until the New Year. A vacancy at Williams is the only other place left on the 2012 grid.
