Vettel misses out on Germany's athlete award
Despite his dominance in Formula 1, World Champion Sebastian Vettel was not able to pick up 2011’s Athlete of the Year title in homeland Germany.
Winner of the Sportler des Jahres after securing his first F1 crown in 2010, this year saw the Red Bull driver amass 3,503 votes to place second but miss out to basketball’s Dirk Nowitzki by 365 votes. Also amongst the top names was Stefan Bradl, in fourth place after winning MotoGP’s Moto2 honours.
A crushing campaign for Vettel saw him break several records, notably the statistic of most pole positions in a season (15) previously been held by Nigel Mansell.
