I have a long-term HRT contract, Liuzzi repeats

21 December 2011

Vitantonio Liuzzi has reiterated that he has a long-term deal in place which should keep him at HRT for the 2012 Formula 1 season. With only this vacancy and a Williams slot seemingly remaining for next year’s grid, speculation is rife surrounding a number of drivers.

After being left on the sidelines by Force India, Liuzzi signed with HRT for 2011 but has always insisted that he was in place for more than a single campaign.

“In early 2011 we agreed on a long-term contract with HRT,” the Italian told Australian Motorsport News. “It would have made no sense to sign with a team at this level on just a one-year contract; you have to make it a project for the future and that is why I want to stay in 2012.”

A possible pitfall for Liuzzi is that HRT's ownership changed in June, with the team formerly owned by the Hispania Group being bought out by Thesan Capital.

Liuzzi, the European F3000 (now GP2) Champion of 2004, made his F1 debut with Red Bull in 2005, then securing a full-time Toro Rosso seat for two seasons. In 2008 he spent a year on the Force India reserves bench before returning to racing in 2009.
