Ex Grand Prix driver Gerhard Berger has backed Toro Rosso's decision to overhaul its driver line-up for the 2012 season, arguing that now former drivers Sébastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari were ultimately not strong enough in Formula 1.
The Austrian, who was involved with the Faenza squad from 2006-2008, moved to support Red Bull’s somewhat hardline driver approach, with Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne now being given full opportunities to prove their worth.
"I think it's correct, although it is very hard," Berger told Motorsport-Total of the team’s decision. "For the drivers it's always hard, but for Red Bull and Toro Rosso, it's about preparing drivers - ideally from the Red Bull-pool.
"They need to find one that will eventually be the successor of Mark Webber or Sebastian Vettel when they move on. The demand for Red Bull is the highest, as we know, and the two (Buemi and Alguersuari) are at most average."
Berger also discussed one half of the outfit’s new line-up, explaining that Formula Renault 3.5 graduate Jean-Eric Vergne will be an exciting talent to look out for.
"I've heard a lot of good things about the young Frenchman - maybe he’s a new Sebastian Vettel," he added. "You have to try it, otherwise you do not know."
