Upcoming British racer Alexander Sims has set himself a challenge: to reach the summit of Africa’s infamous Mount Kilimanjaro. The 23-year-old will climb in aid of the Henry Surtees Foundation (HSF); the son of 1964 World Champion John Surtees was killed during a Formula 2 race at Brands Hatch in 2009.
The climb in Tanzania, which is estimated to take nine days starting on Saturday 29 January, will see Sims reach the dizzy heights of 19,300 feet (almost six kilometres).
“I have decided to raise money for the Henry Surtees Foundation as, having been Henry's team-mate in Formula Renault, it is close to my heart,” says Sims, McLaren Autosport Award winner of 2008 and a regular GP3 front-runner last year.
“The foundation supports those who are affected by brain injury and helps turn their lives around. I would like to make the point that 100% of donations will go to charity. I will fund the trip myself.
A dormant volcano, Kilimanjaro has not seen a major eruption for 360,000 years.
