McLaren will be capable of winning the opening Grand Prix of 2012 in Australia. That is according to test and reserve driver Gary Paffett, who spoke exclusively with GPUpdate.net on Wednesday and is highly positive over the team’s latest car.
The MP4-27 of 2012 could be the car which takes McLaren to a first Constructors’ title since 1998, having finished second overall to Red Bull in both 2010 and 2011.
“There is a lot of development still to be done but we are getting close to our first race package now, and then there are obviously the big updates for the European races - but it’s all going well, I would say,” Paffett told GPUpdate.net
When asked if winning in Melbourne will be possible, the Englishman replied:
“Yes, absolutely. I don’t see why not. We had a competitive car for pretty much all of 2011. Red Bull definitely had the pace over us for the majority of the season but, all the way up to the end of the season, we were pushing them very hard. So our plan is certainly to go out there and challenge for a race win in Melbourne.”
Albert Park’s street circuit hosts the opening 2012 Formula 1 round on 18 March. McLaren last won the Australian Grand Prix two years ago with Jenson Button.
