Hülkenberg: I want to establish myself in F1

9 January 2012

Nico Hülkenberg says his main priority upon returning to Formula 1 will be to establish himself as a firm member of the grid, with the German being handed the second race seat opportunity of his career by Force India.

The former GP2 Champion held the role of reserve driver with the Silverstone squad last year, having been dropped by Williams at the end of his debut campaign in 2010.

''For me personally, I just want to establish myself in Formula 1,'' Hülkenberg told GPUpdate.net of his hopes for the 2012 season. ''I want to deliver well to make sure I will still be in the sport in 2013 and many years beyond.

''I cannot say figures like 'I want to have X amount of points' - that is not possible. I want to do as well as possible and meet the team's expectations.''

Hülkenberg also discussed new team-mate Paul di Resta, admitting that although the Scot will be difficult to beat, the challenge should make Force India stronger.

''Obviously in Formula 1 you always want to beat your team-mate,'''he added. ''This will be very tough, because Paul is very talented and has a good approach. Plus, I will need some races to re-find my former level of performance. But we will hopefully push each other and, by doing that, push the team forward as well.''

During his initial 19-race stint in the sport, Hülkenberg collected an impressive total of 22 points and memorably claimed pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix.
