Drivers mourning for trainer Raniero Gianotti

9 January 2012

Several Formula 1 drivers are paying their respects this week following the death of Raniero Gianotti. The Italian trainer, 46, passed away on Sunday after suffering a heart attack when on a bicycle ride.

After beginning his F1 career with Minardi, Gianotti then worked with Rubens Barrichello at Stewart and Ferrari. He later moved on to support current World Champion Sebastian Vettel before spending 2010 and 2011 with Jaime Alguersuari and Sébastien Buemi at Toro Rosso

“Today I lost a brother,” Alguersuari, who is attending Gianotti’s funeral, said on Sunday. “Raniero, you will remain in my heart forever. I got here because of you and will not ever forget that. I love you, Raniero.”

“It was so sad when I received the news that my great friend and physio Raniero had passed away,” Barrichello said on Twitter.

A funeral is taking place in Urbino, Italy on Monday.
