Organisers of the Bahrain Grand Prix have responded to claims from a Human Rights group which is hoping to persuade Formula 1 teams to boycott the April race. The nation returns to the sport's calendar in 2012, with last season’s event having been called off as capital city Manama was engulfed by riots and general political unrest.
The 2012 race is scheduled to take place as Round 4 of the season on 22 April, meaning it would be the fourth in a quartet of season-opening ‘flyaway’ events beginning in Australia. However, with campaigners arguing that the country is using F1 to alter its image, the Bahrain International Circuit has responded to the claims.
‘Last year, The King of Bahrain commissioned an independent report into alleged human rights abuses, the findings of which were published in November,’ a Sakhir circuit spokesman explained to GPUpdate.net on Monday.
‘The report found evidence of human rights violations and made certain general and specific recommendations. The Government has fully acknowledged the findings of the report and is acting swiftly and convincingly on the recommendations.
The Bahrain Grand Prix forms a fundamental part of the local economy. It is supported by an overwhelming majority of people from all sections of society in Bahrain and represents a symbol of national unity. The independent report was a milestone for Bahrain and we will now work tirelessly to ensure that the race is a great success.’
