Rubens Barrichello believes he is competing with two other drivers for the remaining 2012 Williams seat. With Pastor Maldonado already re-signed at the Grove-based team, Brazilian Barrichello is up against notable names such as compatriot Bruno Senna and Germany’s Adrian Sutil.
After winning two races and finishing third overall with Brawn in 2009, Barrichello joined Williams at the start of 2010, achieving respectable results such as fourth place in Valencia and fifth at Silverstone. After the squad suffered its worst ever Formula 1 season last year, Barrichello – the sport’s most experienced driver - remains currently on the sidelines and fighting to keep his racing career alive.
“Well, it’s taking longer than I wished for, to be honest,” Barrichello told Peter Windsor’s The Flying Lap online broadcast. “I have been thinking positively, I have always put it this way; you’ve got to believe in things and if they haven’t happened just yet you have got to believe that they have happened in your mind.
“I am fighting for the position. I think there are two other drivers who have potential to be driving at Williams, but I feel like I am quite a good candidate and that I should be driving there. There’s lot of changes for the team – the engine, new people around – and I think what I can tell people at Williams is that experience comes gratis, in a way. It’s just there.”
In a time of change for Williams, with the technical team having undergone a major reshuffle following Sam Michael’s departure, Barrichello stresses that his understanding is paramount.
“Where are you going to find someone with my experience and so much of a will to do well?” he continued. “I still have so much feeling for the car and I want to drive it as fast as I can. I don’t know how that is happening because when I was in my 20s I thought, ‘I don’t know, maybe when I’m 30 I’m done.’ I’m now 39 and I’m still feeling to go; I think this is the best thing that can be happening to me right now and I hope to be driving this year.”
Barrichello made his Formula 1 debut in 1993, driving for Jordan. His chances for the Williams seat may have increased on Friday, with Adrian Sutil now facing a trial and possible suspended prison sentence of one year.
