Ricciardo: Red Bull is just a goal for now

14 January 2012

Daniel Ricciardo is keeping his feet on the ground when it comes to progressing his F1 career. Parachuted into HRT by Red Bull in 2011, the Australian now joins Toro Rosso for his first full campaign. Many expect the Perth man to replace compatriot Mark Webber at Red Bull Racing the following year, although he is remaining calm.

Ricciardo debuted with HRT at Silverstone, racing alongside Vitantonio Liuzzi with the exception of India when Narain Karthikeyan made a brief return. Heading into his Toro Rosso year, which will be alongside F1 rookie Jean-Éric Vergne, Ricciardo is relaxed.

“There has already been talk about this in the media, which seems pretty optimistic,” he is quoted as telling the official F1 website of a possible Red Bull future with Sebastian Vettel. “We haven’t even sat in a car yet for 2012 and they are already looking at 2013. It’s a long time away and many things can happen between now and then, that’s the reality.

“I understand very well the philosophy of Red Bull and, yes, one day I would love to race for Red Bull Racing, but that’s all it is for now - just a bit of a goal. I have 20 races this year which I will take one by one and make sure I leave every event fulfilled and with no regrets.”

British Formula 3 Champion of 2009, Ricciardo finished a close second in the 2010 Formula Renault 3.5 championship – just as new team-mate Vergne did a year later.
