Mark Webber will be able to enjoy 2010-like pace once again, should he be able to improve his qualifying efforts in 2012. That is the opinion of former team-mate and BBC television commentator David Coulthard, who shared his opinions at last weekend’s Autosport Show.
Coulthard and Webber shared the Red Bull garage for two seasons, with the Australian having switched from Williams for 2007 before the Scot hung up his helmet at the end of the following year; he was then replaced by Sebastian Vettel.
“We've seen some incredible performances from Mark and he's a gutsy driver,” Coulthard commented. “Like his pass on Alonso at Spa, going into Eau Rouge - I nearly dropped the microphone in the commentary box because I thought it was going to be an aeroplane crash! But he pulled it off and is definitely a great racing driver.”
Coulthard went on to underline that, with Webber having been a star of the one-lap qualifying format which ran between 2003 and 2005, a return to past form would be the answer to his latest issues.
“One of his key strengths in the past was his qualifying - and if you qualify well it makes your whole weekend so much easier,” Coulthard went on. “Within the team you get the prime choice on strategy, you've got track position and running in clean air is much easier than running in dirty air. Mark just needs to rediscover his mojo for qualifying and he'll be fine - because all the rest is there.”
For 2012, Coulthard is joined in the BBC TV commentary box by Ben Edwards, with Martin Brundle and David Croft having both switched to Sky Sports. At BBC Radio 5 live, former ITV TV commentator James Allen takes up the main role.
