Ecclestone: Barcelona and Valencia could alternate

16 January 2012

Bernie Ecclestone says the possibilities of Barcelona and Valencia sharing the Spanish Grand Prix are raising for coming years. At present, Spain is the only country hosting two F1 races but at least one is set to disappear as a permanent fixture, with the USA welcoming a pair of events and Russia debuting over the next three seasons.

With the Catalan government assessing the Barcelona event and officials in Valencia reviewing their own situation, the latter contacted Ecclestone – head of Formula One Management (FOM), the sport’s commercial rights holder – for opinions.

“They are talking about the possibility of alternating the race between Valencia and Barcelona,” Ecclestone explained to the Financial Times. “Maybe that's a good idea, maybe we should do it.”

Valencia’s race – currently run under the title of European Grand Prix – has been staged since 2008, whereas the Circuit de Catalunya’s Spanish Grand Prix history dates back to 1991 and a battle between Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna.
