Bruno Senna has delightedly recalled the happiness of his family, having been confirmed as a Williams driver on Tuesday. In 1994, uncle and triple Formula 1 World Champion Ayrton drove for the team but was tragically killed in a freak accident at the San Marino Grand Prix.
By sealing the second Williams spot alongside Pastor Maldonado, Senna Jr. ironically replaces fellow Brazilian countryman Rubens Barrichello; in 2009, it was the latter who prevented the former from entering the sport with Brawn GP.
“Everybody is ecstatic,” Senna explained to Reuters in a conference call. “I spoke to my grandparents even before I spoke to my mother when I got the news - my grandmother was so happy and my grandfather had a great laugh. Everybody knows that we have been fighting so hard for a real chance in F1 and everybody is thrilled for the fact that Williams has given me that opportunity.
“In the family everybody is smiling, everybody has worked very hard for it. It's very much a family business in our case; we have a great unity and everyone is super happy about it.”
Senna, now 28, began his F1 career with Hispania in 2010 before taking the place of Nick Heidfeld at Lotus Renault GP from last year’s Belgian Grand Prix. He went on to score two points for ninth place at Monza. Following the loss of his uncle 18 years ago, Senna's own father was killed in a motorcycle crash in 1996.
