Trulli: I know nothing of Petrov rumours

19 January 2012

Jarno Trulli insists that his 2012 preparations are continuing as usual, despite speculation that Vitaly Petrov could be drafted into Caterham as a last-minute replacement. Having been dropped by Lotus Renault GP, the only Russian Formula 1 driver currently remains on the sidelines.

Although Caterham (formerly Team Lotus) confirmed in September that Trulli will be racing alongside Heikki Kovalainen for a third successive season, rumours continue to circulate the internet of Petrov making a switch to the team by replacing the Italian.

“I have a contract with Caterham and that is that,” a confident Trulli explained to Italy’s Gazetta dello Sport. “I don’t know anything about any rumours and the team has not said anything. On Monday I am in the factory for my seat fitting, everything is normal. People keep saying things about NASCAR or Le Mans, but F1 is all I am talking about.”

Trulli, winner of the 2004 Monaco Grand Prix and 11 times a podium finisher between 1999 and 2009, went on to stress that the Caterham challenge has been one of great difficulties.

“People just don't realise how tough it is to begin from zero. I used to race for Minardi (1997) but this is much harder; you just can’t make mistakes because they have consequences. But I am confident that we can continue to make improvements over the course of the year.”

Trulli’s F1 career began with the aforementioned Minardi 15 years ago, switching to Prost mid-way through the season before making further moves to Jordan, Renault, Toyota and Team Lotus in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2010 correspondingly.
