Formula 1 governing body the FIA has made a dramatic move to ban active ride height systems. The innovation had promised to be a chief talking point of the 2012 season, with Lotus and Ferrari having seemingly been the first to trial such tools.
With the aforementioned teams having allegedly run the systems in Abu Dhabi last year, GPUpdate.net has since learned that all teams have been developing active ride height to a certain degree; this is designed to stabilise a car under braking, enabling better airflow and therefore greater levels of grip and steadiness.
Initially, teams were informed by the FIA that such a tool could be implemented. However, following deeper investigation by the Paris-based federation, its viewpoint has changed given that the sole purpose of active ride height is to differ the car’s aerodynamic performance.
