Monday morning has seen Kimi Räikkönen return to the cockpit of an F1 car in Valencia. The Finn is driving the 2010 Renault prior to official running next month. Today's run allows a first taste of the Pirelli tyres which debuted in 2011.
Due to the restricted testing regulations which came into force in 2009, all teams are prohibited to any running with their new cars until the official pre-season sessions start in Jerez. However, Räikkönen is able to run the Renault of two years ago.
The World Champion of 2007 left his garage just before 9am and will also be in action at the Ricardo Tormo circuit on Tuesday. The run remains private, meaning no media or fan access is allowed at the Spanish track.
‘The Finnish driver is benefitting from a two-day driving session in Spain. The aim of this running is for Kimi to drive as many laps as possible in order to get acquainted with the team and to reacclimatise himself with an F1 car,’ reads a team press release which was issued in the afternoon.
The car has been decked out in the gold and black Lotus livery of 2011, with the Pirelli tyres in question having been labeled 'demonstration specification'.
