Bernie Ecclestone has agreed with the idea of alternating Spain's two Formula 1 races. However, the head of Formula One Management (FOM) claims that respective event organisers do not seem interested in such a plan.
Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya has been on the F1 calendar since 1991, running its race under the title of Spanish Grand Prix; the track’s current deal with Ecclestone will not expire until the end of 2016. In 2008, the Valencia Street Circuit made its debut as host for the European Grand Prix. Last week, the President of the Valencian Community acknowledged that costs must be cut, although Ecclestone now claims that Valencia is not interested in alternating its event with Barcelona.
“It is the commercial concerns which must be addressed,” Ecclestone explained to Germany’s Salzburger Nachrichten. “I am trying to get the races to alternate between Barcelona and Valencia, but the Spaniards don’t want to discuss that. We should not have two races there.”
The Valencia race debuted following double title-winning success for Fernando Alonso in 2005 and 2006. Spain is now the only country with two F1 races to its name, with Italy’s Imola having left the calendar six years ago and Germany’s race being shared between Hockenheim and the Nürburgring. There is also talk of interchanging the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa with a French race at Paul Ricard.
