HRT could debut its new car at the second winter test in Barcelona, after running its 2011 machine at the opening session in Jerez. That is according to Pedro de la Rosa, whose renewed optimism follows doubts from new Team Principal Luis Pérez-Sala.
In the team’s two-year Formula 1 history, it is yet to take part in any pre-season test session; in 2010 the Spanish squad was not ready, while last year several key components were not delivered in time, causing the team to depart the Circuit de Catalunya early. However, de la Rosa is quietly confident that this season’s new car could be in action for eight of the 12 upcoming pre-season days.
“We plan to have the car ready for the second test, which takes place in Barcelona,” he told Brazil’s CorridaF1. “The plan is also to be at the first test with the 2011 car.”
When asked of his expectations, the returning 40-year-old replied:
“I’m not afraid to say that we are the slowest team at the moment, but I hope to improve and develop it to be able to score some points in two years’ time.”
De la Rosa last competed in F1 in a one-off Sauber race, replacing the recovering Sergio Pérez at the 2011 Canadian Grand Prix following the Mexican’s heavy accident in Monaco.
