Pirelli reveals new 2012 tyre markings

25 January 2012

Pirelli has clearerer and modified tyre markings for the 2012 Formula 1 season. The identification colour of each Slick compound remains the same, although the text is somewhat bolder. For Intermediate and Wet compounds, a new Cinturato range has been unveiled; Intermediates are now marked with bright green, with Wets being blue.

The 2012 tyres were unveiled in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, with Pirelli holding a press conference for members of the media. The Italian company explained that its tyre range has been entirely renewed in a bid to make them ‘even more competitive’ and encourage at least two pit-stops for each driver in every race. Each compound has been designed so that its colour marking is more visible when at speed.

The new tyres have a more angular profile, with each compound generally softer than its predecessor to compensate for the revised aerodynamic setups of the cars, not least varying downforce levels now that exhaust-blown diffusers are banned.

Dry weather Slicks keep their ‘PZero’ branding, although the revised Intermediate and Wet compounds are now labelled ‘Cinturato’ – as all Pirelli tyres were when the firm made its Formula 1 debut in 1951.

The tyre marking colours for 2012 are as follows:

Super Soft Red
Soft Yellow
Medium White
Hard Silver
Intermediate Green
Wet Blue

Pirelli became F1’s sole tyre supplier last year, taking over from Bridgestone.
