Valencia waits for Ecclestone’s response

27 January 2012

Valencian authorities are hoping that Bernie Ecclestone will be open to renegotiating their contract and thus securing the imminent future of the European Grand Prix. The regional government has already spoken with the head of Formula One Management (FOM) about the financial difficulties it faces, having hosted the race since 2008.

In November 2009, the Spanish city signed a deal with Ecclestone which appeared to have guaranteed the future of the race. However, it has since admitted its fiscal struggles and reports have continued to circulate - the latest being that Ecclestone hopes to alternate the race with Barcelona.

A simple dissolution of the Valencia contract is not possible.

“There would be a fine and a lawsuit in England to determine any further punishment,” Alberto Fabra, President of the Valencian Community, explained to newspaper El País. “The only solution is to renegotiate the contract. We await a response from Ecclestone; he can tell us what the alternatives are after contacting several organisations - including Catalonia, where the Barcelona race is held.”

In a change for this year, Valencia will not be hosting any F1 testing. Over recent winters, a visit has been made to the Ricardo Tormo circuit on the city’s outskirts.
