Tickets for the 2012 Bahrain Grand Prix are now on sale, it was announced on Sunday. During a press conference, the event was also labelled as ‘UNIF1ED’, with the country having been subject to much political unrest over the past year.
After last year’s season-opening race was cancelled due to the conflict which started with the ‘Day of Rage’ on February 14, the 2012 event is on the calendar as Round 4 on 22 April.
Sunday's gathering was in Paddock Club Lounge Six at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC), with those in attendance including Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa, Chief Executive at BIC and Samer Majali, Chief Executive of race title sponsor Gulf Air.
“Sport brings people together, especially the truest and most dedicated of fans,” Shaikh Salman commented. “Be it in football, tennis, golf or motor racing, there is something special about sport that makes it a great unifier.
“We in Bahrain should feel extremely privileged to be part of an exclusive club of only a handful of countries who can say that they are a host of a Grand Prix and are a part of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship. Our race is a source of pride!
“Based on the success of past Grands Prix, we are all together looking forward to staging yet another spectacular Formula 1 weekend. We are excited about making Bahrain proud and for the whole world to see that we are indeed ‘One Nation in Celebration’.”
During the press conference, it was also noted that an ‘increase in bookings’ is already being enjoyed ahead of the 2012 event. In recent weeks, amid more reports of trouble and suggestions that the race should be called off once again, FOM head Bernie Ecclestone and F1 team chiefs have stated that they both hope and plan to visit Bahrain this year.
