Wurz returns to Williams as driver mentor

20 February 2012

Alexander Wurz has returned to former squad Williams ahead of the 2012 season, fronting its new driver mentor programme. The 37-year-old, who picked up 45 points during a 69-race Formula 1 career, begins his duties in Barcelona this week.

With Pastor Maldonado and Bruno Senna forming the team's line-up for the upcoming campaign, plus GP3 Champion Valtteri Bottas carrying out a reserve role, the outfit hopes to draw on Wurz's vast racing experience and technical knowledge.

"This is a great initiative by Williams and highlights just how hard the team is pushing to optimise its performance," explained Wurz, who competed for the Grove-based guise back in 2007.

"Throughout my career as a sportsman, which started at the age of 12 in BMX racing, includes over a decade in Formula 1 and is still ongoing (racing in the World Endurance Championship), I am lucky to have gained so much experience.

"I grew up in a family business of driver training and naturally I enjoy helping fellow athletes to operate at their best. I’m really looking forward to using my expertise to help Williams at this important stage in its history."

Added to his presence during the upcoming pre-season tests at the Circuit de Catalunya, Wurz will provide support for the team throughout race weekends.
